The genus of nightshade plants (Solanaceae) that surround their fruits with delightful papery sheaths include ground cherries, tomatillos, the remarkable Inca Berry and the ornamental Chinese Lantern. These plants tolerate poor soil conditions and minimal watering but are largely heat lovers. Start the seeds indoors in pots and transplant outside or into the greenhouse once there’s no chance of frost. The tomatillos will self seed quite readily so you can expect to find some “volunteers” popping up in the garden wherever you planted them last year.
