Small scale grain growing is a rewarding habit forming activity. The gateway drug is usually an easy growing “cover crop” such as rye or hulless oats and peas, barley or even buckwheat. Once you are growing a crop to add some “green manure” into your soil to increase fertility or keep the soil covered so that winter erosion doesn’t become a problem, you might as well leave some to mature and eat the grain! It doesn’t take a huge expanse of prairie fields to grow enough grain to harvest and consume. The bonus is that many of these grains are beautiful additions to the garden, adding an elegant and striking feature especially when allowed to mature into blocks or rows of striking plants that dance in the breeze. Thresh with your feet on a tarp or in a large tub and winnow in a brisk breeze!
